Basically only videos will ouput. I was told by people at the Apple store that what we want here is not possible, but I just noticed that Apple's Keynote app will output slideshows. It is doing some fancy footwork in the background to accomplish this, and I'm not sure I could duplicate. I'll revisit this down the road a bit, but as of now, it doesn't seem practically feasable. | Ernie | Nastya99, spaced repetition works similar to Anki, as each cards has an interval (time between testing), and this interval increases after each correct response. The following page has the same documentation on this "spaced repetition" that's in the app, but maybe you can put it through Google translate and convert it to Russian to help: http://orangeorapple.com/Flashcards/AboutSR.aspx ... I know there are quite a few settings for spaced repetition, but the default settings should work well. I've heard of people having 10,000 cards on their 3GS, but not much more would work because of a crash. The version I'm working on now should be able comfortably handle at least twice this much, and I'm hoping for 50,000+ card decks to work well on new devices. Speed / response time will hopefully be the only limiting factor. As for your setup, as long as the delays of loading cards into memory are not too long for you, it should handle 5-10,000 cards now, I'd think. | 9/6/2010 |

| Ernie | Hi saladbar112, 1) To turn on the drawing area, from the study screen, tap (i) in the top right to enter Study Options, then look for the "Drawing" option toward the bottom. 2) There is no mathematic keyboard that I know of, and entering math equations can be difficult. Some special symbols can be found on the internet (search "math unicode"). The following website http://www.codecogs.com/latex/eqneditor.php can create picture files of math formulas, but it has limitations and is not too convenient. Another option: draw the equation on a piece of paper and take a picture of it from the card edit edit screen (assuming you have a camera). A final option: Use another app to draw a picture with your finger, save the picture in your device's library, and select this existing picture from the card edit screen. 3) The drawing feature that exists is not for making cards, but only for answering... the drawing is not saved after you moved to the next card. | Ernie | Ajooba1982, why would you want to save after every tap? I don't do this in order to keep the app more responsive. I do save periodically and on close. When restarting, the app will be at the main screen, but waiting at the same card you left on. Since we have iOS4, I don't have plans anymore to restore the screen you existed on. This requires a bit of work, and will become a moot point as time goes on and more people have multitasking. | 9/5/2010 |

In the study screen (where you flip the cards), at the top left there is a back arrow that said "Decks". If you don't see it, tap near the top of the screen. This toggles full-screen on/off. You should see it after tapping near the top. Let me know if this doesn't help. (The program normally starts at the deck listing screen, but you must be using iOS4 which has multi-tasking, so the app never re-starts. At some point, you'll probably want to learn how to remove a background app from memory.) | 9/5/2010 |

Try formatting your fonts in the flashcards program called Anki in Windows, and then export those flashcards through anki in a tab delimited format. When that file is saved, go inside the file and copy everything, and then paste it into this website. Then import it into you iDevice, and the formatting should be automatically converted. If you have a paid subscription there, you can export decks (CSV -> Spreadsheet -> my upload page works). I'm curious if you see any pattern here, but it sounds like you've recorded lots of sounds, and would have noticed one by now if there was one. I'm sorry, I'm just not sure what to do next. One thing that might help would be crash logs. When you first ran iTunes, it asked if you wanted to help by sending information to Apple. If you said yes, then when you sync to iTunes, your crash logs will get uploaded and I can see them. If you said no, then you'd need to reset this question so it will ask again. version is 4.0.2(8A400) . iphone 4 with 32 GByte.
crashes happens in most cases while pushing the save button after recording sound.
in some cases during recording.
in the mean it crashes in one of ten sound recordings and in different decks.
the result is a blank card,means i lost sound,text and pictures of this card.
actually i now save the new card after creating text and/or pictures and than reenter the card to record the sound. in this case text and picture is still exists after the crash.
so this is my little workaround,because i like to work with your app and actually i already have created hundreds of cards.

Have you considered creating a web page (automatically generated probably) that lists shared decks that are available? It might drive more customers to your application since if people did a web search for flash cards on a subject they could find them, and they might buy your app to be able to use them.
I just shared some decks with all the vocabulary from Rosetta Stone Japanese Level 1. I looked into publishing them on Quizlet but they would lose a lot of information in the process. I put English on side 1, kana on side 2, and kanji on side 3, and use the categories for parts of speech and for which lesson in the unit the vocabulary first appears. | 8/28/2010 |

| Ernie | Hana, ouch, I guess I wasn't very clear on the backup. I meant you need to back up from within the app (by exporting your decks first). I'm sorry! I'm not sure if you can restore it from iTunes, but try 1) if you downloaded the new app directly to your device and haven't synced yet, try deleting the app, and just doing a sync. Make sure you go to the "Apps" tab and check the program to sync as iTunes will probably have unchecked after you delete it. 2) Try to restore from a backup. Attach your device, start iTunes, right-click on your device along the left and choose "Restore from backup". Afterward, make sure the App is checked to sync in the "Apps" tab. I just don't think this will actually restore app data, but don't know for sure. Can you recreate your flashcards? If you made your flashcards on your computer, you can retransfer. If you made them on your device without a backup, you'll need to redo. I will make sure I'm more clear on this backing up part in the future with others. | 8/28/2010 |

It would be great if changing the settings of a combination deck would, optionally of course, be copied to the underlying decks. I have many many decks as they continuously grow over time, and changing the settings after some time then is a real pain. Nevertheless - your app is the best way for me to learn Japanese. Or is there any plan to make all the controls and explainations tailorable to various languages? | Micky Panda | I use Category 1 to record the chapter of the course I am studying, so being able to select Category 1 values for list grouping or to select what vocab chapter is to be studied is very important, of course. Would be great to have a personal setting for the default list grouping, when going to list view. Obviously not essential, but I like personal user controlled settings. The more, the better.
But the change that would be most desirable for me (and I have mentioned before) would be a minimum of 4 cards till a wrong answer card repeats and a minimum of 10 cards before a correct answered card repeats, or better still make these user settings. Exception would be when too few cards remaining in study set. Would decrease randomness of the cards arrival but that would not be a problem to me. No need to answer this one Ernie unless you want to change your previous answer. I am only saying that this is to me the No. 1 weakness is the "spaced repetition".
Meanwhile, my German vocab has been improving at a tremendous rate of knots, using flashcards. I've learned far more vocab in 6 weeks than in the previous 6 months. Its got to be because the Flashcards Deluxe application is a pleasure to use on a daily basis anytime when there is time to spare and the brain not otherwise occupied doing something else. For English to German (the more difficult direction) I have got just over 2000 cards to active status over the 6 weeks, and only a small number due. Some probably 20% or so were easy and I already knew, but still I feel its a big achivement for a brain not so young any more. In order to make fast progress, I double the review period for correct, and multiply it by 5 for strongly correct. Mostly my next review of previously "strongly correct" cards, will also be correct. So 5 times longer is proving O.K. for cards that are virtually in the "too easy" category.
I am now thinking about improving my vocab in another language that I already speak moderately well for a foreigner, but realise my vocab. is limited. | 8/28/2010 |
| Ernie | Stefan, yeah this is a problem I recently learned about and don't have a perfect solution yet. (Apple seems to have a small sizing problem with Japanese characters in their web view.) One new setting in the new version might help... change the font to "Heiti Japanese". The font setting is now in the Study Options screen. The new problem here is that this font may not show all Japanese characters perfectly, as a few characters are shown as the Chinese variation... but it will fix the text-off-the-screen problem. Another work-around is to add a few blank lines to the end of your long text, which can help. | 8/28/2010 |

There is an option "Postpone Due Until". Change this to say 7am. A card due at 2pm will not show as due until the next 7am. In this way you can work on all your due cards at your desired time. Most of the records download just fine, but 3 (out of 60+) come across strangely. I've assigned categories to all of them, but two of them download as "unassigned". | maxi | Hi Ernie ... removing group by Category ... you are kidding right? Please don't remove this option. Even when it only shows numbers from 1 to x, it is so helpful. I have a list with 800 and more words which will keep increasing ... when I look up things, I usually don't know in which category something is and with japanese words know the kanjis but not necessarily the pronounciation. I usually do know however, whether it was in one of the first or one of the last categories or in the middle and when seeing a lesson (my categories are my lessons) I know whether the word is in that one or not. It is so helpful to be able to quickly jump to the start of each category to get an overview and quickly browse through them or to the next to find something. I don't know ever use the filter option, as I usually use the browse mode to just look up things or quickly go through one lesson after the next - I don't know what alphabetic order would be good for. I don't use Kanji Flash as a dictionary and never will. I use it to look up things from a lesson I am not sure about and in these cases I often don't know their spelling or kanji (otherwise I wouldn't have to look them up). But I do know whether they were in a rather recent lesson (category) or more towards the middle or beginning. Please keep the group by category feature!!! | 8/25/2010 |

| Ernie | chris, 1) to export from ipod to website, at the main screen tap "Edit", your deck, "Export", make sure "Export To" to set to "Server", then "Export". 2) The problem with your text file is... your new-line codes are different. For all but the last line, the text file uses a single new line code (LF). But after the last line, the text file has a 2-byte code (CR LF). This is confusing my upload process. I'm not sure why this is happening for you, but you'll need to fix this to use your own server to download. One way is to copy-paste your text into my website, then re-copy back to your text file, which should fix it up. | Ernie | maxi, It's always just shows number from 1 to X. Categories might be "nouns", "verbs", so it's not easy to assign a 1 char index to represent the full description. Having said that, I'd like to get rid of this functionality to group by Category in a future version. You'd be able to group alphabetically or raw order, but only filter by Category one at a time if you wanted something like that. I'm sure I'll catch hell for removing a feature. | maxi | Hi Ernie. I have a question about the list view with all entries. I use categories for my lessons, so each vocabulary word has a number as "category 1". When I choose GROUP - by Category 1 - I see little numbers on the right hand side which are supposed to be the categories for easier access to scroll to the right spot in the list. But while the categories are from 6 to 16, these numbers are from 1 to 11. If I choose 9 I end up at the beginning of my category 14. Is it possible to use my categories there? I have over 300 cards and will have much more when I am done studying. I used returns when typing the flaschards in Quizlet so that the cards are easy to read instead of one big paragraph.
In the Quizlet export page I have tried all combination of deliminators but the question and answers do not appear correctly on FCD when I copy & paste to upload.

The way I do it is to search the internet (e.g. "Math unicode")... and you get symbols like √≤⊕¼Δ. I just copy-paste them from the internet into my text. (The font you use is not important.) I have no "example" to show with spreadsheet... it's just finding what you want and pasting it into your text. Using "unicode" there are thousands of characters you can show (different languages, math symbols, etc), but they can't use a special font to show them. | Ernie | Chris, here's how you use TextEdit to save as UTF8: go to "Format" menu and "Make Plain Text". Then when you save, you can choose "Unicode (UTF-8)" as the "Plain Text Encoding". When I open your link, I just get a blank file. Put some text in it and save as UTF-8, and give it another try. Let me know if you have problems after this... Now I am looking how to add some special characters from other fonts than Arial. But after copying the text to your upload page the sign in changed back to Arial. Couldn't save it as utf-8 within textedit (mac). So I used textwrangler (mac) and saved it under unix (LF) / Unicode (UTF-8)... when I open it in the browser I go this: 
Goal is to upload my 24 existing vocabs with sides and cats to my webserver.
So I went to Private Deck and put the Deck Code, the above mentioned webaddress in and clicked Download Cards: --> Download Error: The text file could not be read. Did you save it in UTF-8 format?

| chris | wow... best tool we've found for vocab. my classes will probly use it heavily. two important things are missing. we're learning vocab in categories like school, work, marked, and 100 more. some words are in lots of diff. cats.
we need:
under cat 1 we need to check as many cats as we want. (very important!)

| Ernie | Jon, yeah this is a bug that will get fixed soon when the new version comes out. For now, you just need to change each deck one at a time... change the current deck only (don't go into the "by Deck" menu) then back out to the deck listing and select another deck. | Ted | Okay, I got it working with the media-dir trick. When I was trying that earlier, I left out the media-dir column, and so I just saw a flash card with * on it.
One thing that's sub-optimal from my point of view is that I have to hit the play button to make the sound play--really what I want is for it to play as soon as I get to that side of the flash card. Is there any way to make that happen? | 8/22/2010 |

| Ernie | Ted, sounds files go in a directory with the same name as the text file, so "fugue.com/fcd/testdeck/". This is where the app looks for them. In your case, put them in "fuge.com/fcd/testdeck/audio" since that is what you have in your text, or just remove the "audio" in your text file. Let me know if this doesn't help. | 8/22/2010 |
